Gen-Z – An Open Fabric Technology Standard on the Journey to Composability
Over the last few blogs I’ve touched on Composable Infrastructure – the value and challenges.
2 Jun 2016 Reality Check: Is Composable Infrastructure Ready for Prime Time?
30 Nov 2015 A Practical View of Composable Infrastructure
We highlighted the three major challenges that must be resolved before the industry can truly achieve composable infrastructure:
1) Lack of software-defined intelligence
2) Lack of new industry standard around a modern IO/Memory fabric at rack scale, which is needed for full composability
3) Lack of industry standard around openness, allowing customers to allocate resources across multiple vendors’ technology.
We’ve made positive progress on these fronts. We continue to address software standards and APIs through:
DMTF Redfish(TM) API
Scalability in today’s data center is increasingly achieved with horizontal, scale-out solutions, which often include large quantities of simple servers. The usage model of scale-out hardware is drastically different than that of traditional enterprise platforms, and requires a new approach to management.

SNIA Swordfish™
The SNIA Swordfish™ specification helps to provide a unified approach for the management of storage and servers in hyperscale and cloud infrastructure environments, making it easier for IT administrators to integrate scalable solutions into their data centers. SNIA Swordfish is an extension of the DMTF Redfish specification, so the same easy-to-use RESTful interface is used, along with JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) and Open Data Protocol (OData), to seamlessly manage storage equipment and storage services in addition to servers.
Chinook spawns and expands Redfish
Dell, through work in the industry group codenamed Chinook (Dell, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Microsoft, VMware, and Intel), submitted work in PCIe Switch, BIOS and local storage models to the DMTF SPMF (RedFish). Chinook submissions to the SPMF for Redfish expand coverage with the goal of addressing all the components in the data center with a consistent API enabling customers and operators to better deal with the velocity of deployment and management of constantly evolving technologies.
DMTF Shares Redfish In-Band Host Interface Plans
DMTF’s innovative Redfish standard continues its fast progression, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Scalable Platforms Management Forum (SPMF). Now on version 2016.2 (recently released in final form), Redfish work to date has focused on defining a TCP/IP-based out-of-band interface between a client and a management controller. As SPMF continues its open approach, responding to feedback and addressing the needs of the industry, the group’s Host Interface Task Force is working to add an in-band host interface to Redfish. This will allow applications and tools running on an Operating System (both deployment and production) to communicate with the Redfish service, which is managing the system using the Redfish API.
Today I’m happy to report progress on #2) lack of new industry standard around a modern IO/Memory fabric at rack scale, which is needed for full composability.
Introducing Gen-Z – New Gen-Z consortium to develop scalable, high-performance fabric technology aimed at simplifying data access at rack scale.
On October 11, 2016 – A group of leading technology companies announced the Gen-Z consortium, an industry alliance working to create and commercialize a new scalable computing Interconnect and protocol. This flexible, high-performance memory semantic fabric provides a peer to peer interconnect that easily accesses large volumes of data while lowering costs and avoiding today’s bottlenecks. The alliance members include AMD, ARM, Broadcom, Cavium, Cray, Dell EMC, IBM, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), Huawei, IDT, Lenovo, Mellanox Technologies, Ltd., Microsemi, Micron, RedHat, Samsung, Seagate, SK Hynix, Western Digital and ilinx.
Modern computer systems have been built around the assumption that storage is slow, persistent, and reliable while data in memory is fast but volatile. As new Storage Class Memory technologies emerge that drive the convergence of storage and memory attributes, the programmatic and architectural assumptions that have worked in the past are no longer optimal. The challenges associated with explosive data growth, real-time application demands, the emergence of low latency storage class memory, and demand for rack scale resource pools require a new approach to data access.
Gen-Z provides the following benefits:
High Bandwidth, Low Latency: Simplified interface based on Memory Semantics, scalable to 112GT/s and beyond with DRAM class latencies
Advanced Workloads and Technologies: Enables data centric computing with scalable memory pools and resources for real time analytics and in-memory applications. Accelerates new memory and Storage innovation.
Compatible and Economical: Highly software compatible with no required changes to the Operating System. Scales from simple, low cost connectivity to highly capable, rack scale interconnect.
Why do we need Gen-Z?
System memory is flat or shrinking
Memory bandwidth per core continues to decrease
Memory capacity per core is generally flat
Memory is changing on a different cadence compared to the CPU
Data is growing
Data that requires real-time analysis is growing exponentially
The value of the analysis decreases if it takes too long to provide insights
The industry needs an open architecture to solve the problems
Memory tiers will become increasingly important
Rack-scale composability requires a high bandwidth, low latency fabric
Must seamlessly plug into existing ecosystems without requiring OS changes
What is a Memory Semantic Fabric?
Handles all communication as memory operations such as load/store, put/get and atomic operations typically used by a processor
Memory semantics are optimal at sub-microsecond latencies from CPU load command to register store
Unlike, storage accesses which are block based and managed by complex, code intensive, software stacks
Why Now?
The emergence of low latency, Storage Class Memory (SCM) and the demand for large capacity, rack scale resource pools, and multi node architectures
Gen-Z Consortium Mission
Create a next generation interconnect that will bridge existing solutions while enabling new unbounded innovation
Develop in an open, non-proprietary standards body where adoption, differentiation and innovation is promoted as an industry standard.

About the Gen-Z Consortium
A Transparent Organization: Gen-Z has been formed as a not-for-profit organization, its ongoing development occurs on the basis of an open decision-making procedure available to all interested parties.
Wide availability: The Gen-Z standard will be published and available free of charge.
End-User Choice: There are no constraints on the re-use of the standard. Gen-Z creates a fair, competitive market for implementations of the standard.
Equality: Gen-Z does not favor one implementer over another.
As I have said in previous blogs, the path to composability will be a journey that requires new thinking and new technologies. With Gen-Z in place, along with continued advancement on Open & Standard Software APIs, the industry is now one step closer to enabling a future composable data center. Now it’s time to get busy and build the future based on these new technologies.
In conclusion, truly composable infrastructure is becoming more possible in the future. At Dell EMC, we’re actively working to make true composable infrastructure a reality in the long run – expanding Redfish/Chinook and now Gen-Z are great examples of Dell EMC working with industry leaders on the journey. We’ve already delivered innovative and transformative solutions like Active System Manager, PowerEdge FX architecture, Open Networking, and G5/DSS 9000 that make progress towards the desired end state. We are working hard to address the key issues to deliver a true “fully composable infrastructure”.

Transforming Infrastructure at the Edge
Transforming Infrastructure at the Edge
We’re living in the age of the consumer, where everything and everyone is digitally connected. From devices to wearables to driverless cars, Gartner estimates there will be 20.8 billion connected “things” by 2020 and a report by IDC says the digital universe is doubling every two years, reaching 40,000 exabytes (or 40 TRILLION gigabytes) by 2020. At what promises to be a historic event next week, Dell EMC is focusing on that ever-connected world we live in and discussing how companies need to adapt now in order to stay relevant and ahead of their competition.
Our Extreme Scale Infrastructure (ESI) division will be at Dell EMC World in a big way, too. We’ll be talking about edge computing, infrastructure flexibility, and the benefits of moving data centers closer to the end user, along with what that means for carriers, service providers and the consumer. We’ll be showing off some of our latest innovations and capabilities that transform infrastructure at the edge - some of which haven’t been seen publicly before.
http://www.parts-dell.cc/product-detail/15-6-dell-xps-15-9550-uhd-touchscreen-lcd-display-complete-assembly-hhtkr/
But first, let me take a step back to talk about edge computing and why it’s so important. Driven by the Internet of Things (IoT), video-on-demand and big data, edge computing puts data centers closer to the user, at the “edge” of the network. This allows information that is important in our every day lives to be accessed faster – whether it is receiving instant traffic reports on your phone, playing an augmented reality game like Pokémon Go or wearing goggles in the not-too-distant future for a virtual reality shopping experience. For carriers and service providers, edge computing opens the door for massive performance improvements while also creating new service and revenue opportunities.
At Dell EMC World, we’ll demonstrate how we’re taking infrastructure to the edge with our new micro Modular Data Center (MDC). This is exactly what it sounds like: a small, nimble MDC designed for service providers who want to enable edge computing, but don’t need the larger MDCs that ESI has been building for the hyperscale giants for years now. Complete with local compute, storage, and networking as well as integrated power & cooling, these micro MDCs not only provide rapid installation but speed the storage and processing of nearby data versus sending it back to a centralized data center or cloud provider.
The micro MDC we’ll be showing at Dell EMC World is composed of three racks: one IT rack featuring our DSS 9000 rack-scale infrastructure alongside two racks of power & cooling equipment. But the real beauty of MDCs is the modularity that can be tailored to a variety of configurations and workloads based on customer needs. Whether it is placed indoors or outdoors, leveraging outside air or mechanical cooling technologies, built with one rack or 24+ racks, or configured with all IT equipment or a mixture of IT and power & cooling, MDCs provide ultimate flexibility while being managed as a unified software-defined environment.
Speaking of software-defined, our DSS 9000 infrastructure is a leading example of the shift toward software-defined hardware, creating more flexibility in hardware provisioning. Purpose-built for service providers and available to select customers today, the DSS 9000 offers compute and storage sleds, built in networking, shared power & cooling as well as next-generation management via Intel Rack Scale Design (RSD) and Redfish. The combination allows users to allocate shared pools of compute, storage and networking dynamically across workloads as they need them and within the cloud environment of their choice. As an example, we’ll be demonstrating how to quickly deploy an OpenStack cluster with the DSS 9000, Intel RSD POD Manager and OpenStack Fuel at Dell EMC World.
http://www.parts-dell.cc/product-detail/15-6-dell-latitude-3570-wxgahd-lcd-led-widescreen-k96d2/
Experts at BI Intelligence estimate that 5.6 billion IoT devices will utilize edge computing for data collection and processing in 2020. We believe micro MDCs outfitted with dense solutions like the DSS 9000 will be an attractive choice for carriers and service providers who are trying to stay ahead of that data deluge in today’s highly digital world. The combination of compute, storage and networking as well as integrated power & cooling – all in a small, flexible data center that can be as little as the size of one-half of a parking space means these MDCs can go almost anywhere and in any environment around the world. That’s truly living on the edge of digital transformation!

Let's me tell you more about these Dreambox's
Let's me tell you more about these Dreambox's
The more esoteric uses of Dreambox cannot be discussed on this forum, and attempting to do so is a quick way of getting your account here cancelled.
However staying strictly within the forum rules I can say this:
Ive got an old 7020 which I use for the free channels from 7 lnb's and with a TNTSat (France) ftv card. Its a fabulous bit of kit - You can stream media across your home lan, or watch 4:2:2 news and sports feeds via vlc.
The linux boxes are infinitely customisable and can be set up more or less how you like.
Using a Dreambox to get cheap Skybox is self evidently illegal and cannot be condonned.
However, a Dreambox has many plusses as a FTA receiver - especially the HD models.
They work best coupled to a steerable satellite dish,. That way you can (legally) watch plenty of HD channels not available via a Sky HD box and, of course, hundreds of SD ones. Many are not in English, of course, but you can customise language in some cases and some have either English language options or subtitles.
It also allows access to FTA channels on UK satellite - even HD ones - that sometimes you cannot watch via Sky whilst under test as Sky boxes do not allow all the tuning options that a Dreambox will.
If you have a legal Sky sub (ie you have paid for it in the UK) I gather there are ways to use the Dreambox to watch the Sky channels as well. Though not sure that you are meant to do even this - owing to card/box pairing. But it would seem unlikely you are going to upset Sky if you are legally paying them a sub.
Would not know how as we have a Openbox for this purpose and use the Dreambox for multi satellite only. But we were, for instance, able to watch ITV HD via the Dreambox from its launch and for a long time until it was made available via a Sky HD box during the year or two it was supposedly Freesat only and had been coded in such a way as to stop Sky HD boxes picking it up.

What is Dreambox satellite receiver and How it Works ?
I need following Information please..and very sorry if it is already discussed in this forum..as I tried to find the same but couldn't find it....
Currently I have got Skybox TV and SKY Broadband through BT Phone line...
If I will cancel the SKY TV and buy the dreambox..can I get all the channels through SKY Broadband ? It is not the cable broadband.
Also, do I need any more software to install on dreambox ? Which dreambox is good for me ? In short, I don't want any TV Subscription from SKY or other TV Provider....and still wants to watch all major channels..through broadbad..is it possible ?
Your help is much appreciated...and I am sorry if anything is wrong in this thread...
Thanks Morrisoft for quick reply...So If I will keep my SKY TV package then Can I able to get all the channels through dreambox which I have not subscribed for ? Like ASIAN Channels or SKY Sports...etc
If you do have a cable feed to the house, you can use a dreambox, but only if the feed is connected, and on the VM network, be that ex-cw, ex-tw or ex-ntl.
You could always opt for free-sat, or a motorised dish setup, there is plenty of 'free' satellite channels you could receive, with the right equipment.
You will not get any subscribed channels from s*y with dream box unless you do a search on google it mate (pain in the ass way of doing it, from what a mate says poor quality too). As above post states if you have cable and get a dreambox for cable different ball game.

As anologuesat always says If you want Sky, you pay for it! I suppose if
you are subscribing, you could put your card in your receiver and give
others your subscription. Feel free to google(We will not tell you about
this method here)
how does dreambox receiver it works sharing server
how does dreambox receiver it works sharing server
Dreambox receivers have many models: dreambox 500s, dreambox 500hd, dreambox 800hd, dreambox 800se, dreambox 8000 hd pvr, dreambox 7020, dreambox receiver: how does it works?
Card sharing technology is sweeping the world with the aid of Linux based satellite receivers dreambox receiver, vu plus receivers.
There are a huge range of satellite receivers now on the market that have the capabilities of supplying digital satellite viewing through IP services, such as the Dreambox 500S ,Cloud Ibox Dreambox 500hd Dreambox 800, vu solo, vu duo, vu uno, vu solo 2.
In short, you can receive all your favourite channels (premium channels without smart card) from your server suppliers by simply using your broadband(can be possible of internet, 3G or GPRS) at home. Of course it need server account, you can source it in your local market
This digital satellite receiver like Dreamlink receiver, vu plus receiver, skybox receivers, openbox receivers need a sharing protocol software installed called CCcam (newcamd, mgcamd, avatar cam etc). This is the bit of software that talks directly to our servers that hold the original satellite subscription information. Every 2-5 seconds your tv picture would be encrypted by the supplier and therefore needs the de-cryption keys. Once this happens, your satellite receiver dreambox will talk to your providers servers to obtain the password in real time and deliver it back to your receiver. This all happens in milliseconds to make sure that your viewing pleasure is not disturbed by freezing or pixilation. Vu Plus There are a few providers out there and many have been tested and found to have picture freeze etc.. You can find in your local market for some good server providers.
It is very simple to set this up on your digital satellite receiver, firstly you need to install and run sharing protocols like CCcam, some of them are pre-installed when you buy satellite receivers from China factory (new camed, avatar camed). You can usually download this directly by using your remote control and the update features on your satellite receiver. Once installed you need an ftp software to add the control username and password to your configuration file. Again this is very simple, there are lots of examples on the internet or satellite forum, some server prvoiders can send you all you need after you ordered server Openbox account from them. Once inserted; your satellite receiver will start decrypting most of the premium channels that your satellite dish is able to receive. The satellite dish can be 60cm, 90cm, 120cm, or C band, or Ku band, you can also use a motorized satellite dish for it as you wish.
Because of the nature of the business server providers make sure that your identity and theirs is always secure, they house the web servers and email servers in Panama. They also utilise advanced server technology to hide the location of the main cluster by moving the traffic around the world country by country so that the location of the main cluster can not be indentified. Lastly they do not hold any data of the customers in their servers.

what does a dreambox work???
what does a dreambox work???
i was wondering what these dreamboxes do as i have heard you can get all these pay/ sky box office channels for free? is this correct? i currently have a sky + 180 box in lounge with output coax with magic eye to bedroom. if it was possible to get this for free would i need another dish or use same one? Dreambox hope you guys can help a techno numpty like me! many thanks
Dreamboxes are little computers but they can do EVERYTHING, because they run a powerful operating system....called....LINUX.
In fact, a Dreambox is a Linux-powered Jynxbox digital satellite decoder, also known as a set-top box.
When used legally, the viewer obtains a card that functions as a decrypting key to access the channels he or she has subscribed to through a TV-provider.
It differs from many other similar Openbox devices because its firmware (software and hardware) is officially upgradeable.
Because its based on an open source platform,Skybox it can be easily hacked to facilitate card sharing, which is why it is commonly used by viewers who wish to obtain television services without paying the subscription fees.
Illegal TV-providers manipulate Dreambox devices to pass on or sell a digital decryption keys to viewers all over world via the internet.
What makes Dreambox so popular is that you can get a combination of football, films and popular TV series on one, cheaper service, that no one platform provides to legitimate subscribers.
A dreambox itself is not illegal. But, due to its indefinite capabilities it can also be used in order to crack paid encrypted channels and make them "Free", an activity which is illegal especially in the UK.
